Vincent Van Gogh 8. Painting of Blossoming Almond Branches for His Nephew

On January 31, 1890, Theo Van Gogh and his wife, Jo, welcomed the birth of a son. In honor of his beloved brother, Theo named the baby Vincent Willem Van Gogh.

Upon hearing the news, Vincent Van Gogh was overjoyed and decided to paint a picture for his newborn nephew. He created a painting of a tree with white almond blossoms against a blue sky, intended to hang in the baby's room.

This might have been the first time in Vincent’s life that he painted with such pure happiness for someone else. Unlike the dark and tormented themes of his previous works, this painting feels strikingly different. The image of the blossoming almond tree exudes beauty, joy, and a bright, uplifting energy.

Perhaps influenced by the spirit of this painting, Vincent’s work began to gain more attention. His art started receiving praise at exhibitions, and his reputation grew among fellow artists. His paintings were prominently displayed at exhibitions, thanks to Theo and Père Tanguy’s studio, and for the first time, his work began to sell.

However, despite these successes, Vincent’s mental health deteriorated, and his seizures and physical condition worsened.
